RW INTERIORS Spring 2011 Newsletter
A robin sighting the other day was a gentle reminder that it is time to get my Spring Newsletter out. Spring is always a time to re-engerize, re-assess, and tackle those indoor decor projects before you want to be spending all of your time outside!
Trend notes:
- Color is back! Say goodbye to grey on grey and enjoy some color back into our lives. Paint companies are showing lots of color in both deep and bright hues. Fabric lines are also showing much more color and mixing up patterns and textures. For a good example of color check out Cobi Ladner’s new site www.cobistyle.com.
- Outdoor living is just getting bigger and better each year. Six years ago, I designed an outdoor living room and dining room in our back yard at the time in Unionville. I think the Landscaper thought I was going a bit overboard, however, outdoor spaces have become increasingly popular extending the indoor living space in the summer months. Since that time, I have worked with several clients in extending their indoor living space into their outdoors with furniture, fabrics and accessories.
Sofa101
Time for a new sofa, but you don’t know where to begin? Here are a few easy steps to help you:
1. Size – makes all the difference. Too big a sofa in a room and your traffic flow will be affected and your room will look too small. Scale in important. Make sure you have some “negative” space around your sofa. Don’t have the arms pushed up against a wall and if you have the space, float the sofa in the room rather than pushed back against a wall. A condo sized sofa or loveseat is a better choice for smaller spaces.
2. Style – the style should reflect the style of the home and the other furnishings in the home. A super contemporary sofa in a traditional style home does not work; however, a transitional style sofa could with the right carpets, draperies and accessories. Arm style, arm height, depth of sofa, and back height of sofa should all be considered depending on the height and size of the people that will be sitting in it and in relation to the size of the room.
3. Price/Quality – always find out the construction. The type of frame, grade of cushion foam etc. Educate yourself on what to expect to pay for the quality you want.
4. Fabric - Children, pets, use of room, all of these factors need to be assessed in order to make a proper choice of fabric.
5. Cushion- foam or down or a combo? Down is ultra soft but needs a lot of fluffing, unless you like the rumpled look. A combination of down wrapped foam is a popular choice but more pricy than just foam.
6. Toss Cushions - and how many? You must toss and do so in a different fabric from the body of the sofa. Toss cushions can add a splash of color and texture, tie in other elements in the room and just give the sofa a cozy feeling. Add as many as you like!
The beauty of the above tips is that they apply to either indoor sofas or out. So whether you are planning to spruce up the indoors or get ready for the summer outdoors keep them in mind.
