RW INTERIORS Spring 2010 Newsletter
Welcome to spring... a season of new beginnings and forward movement. It is also a time to freshen your decor inside and out, in time for all those summer dinners and celebrations.
Trend notes:
- Birds are a big item this season, for indoors and out.... bird statues, bird plates, carpets with birds, cushions with birds. Enjoy the birds!
- Embellishments are back. They are not the overdone trims of the past but understated trims to accent furnishings and fabrics for today's sleeker looks.
- Crystals are still big in chandeliers but with a modern twist. Crystal ornaments (including birds) and crystal trims are light and airy for the spring/summer season.
In this newsletter I would like to focus on ART -- choice and placement of artwork in your home or office.
There are two ways to choose artwork. The first is an artist's work that you enjoy in terms of its style, content and colour. In other words, the art calls to you. The second is to choose decorative art to accent the other elements in a room.
In the first instance, the art is a personal choice and therefore reflects your taste. The next step is to ensure that the piece is framed to fully complement and enhance the artwork. Finally, placement in your home or office is key. The placement will depend on the subject matter of
the art, size, and finishing frame. Personal art is often the factor that drives the other decorative elements in a room such as fabric and accent choices.
In the second instance, where art is chosen to accent the other elements in the room, the furnishings, fabrics and accents will drive the decorative art choice. In this case the framing will be chosen to accent both the art and other room elements. The advantage of decorative art is that it can be chosen to fit any budget.
The placement of art on the wall is very important. The rule of thumb is that the centre to top third of the artwork should be at the eye level of a 5' 6" person. This is an average height and will ensure that the viewing of the artwork can be enjoyed by those who are tall, short or in between. However, there are instances where small adjustments in placement must be made such as ceiling heights, low bulkheads, art behind sofas, and high traffic areas such as hallways.
Always keep in mind that art is the jewellery for your walls....choose wisely.... or better yet have a professional decorator help you!
Have a wonderful, spring/summer!!
