RW INTERIORS Fall 2007 Newsletter
Welcome to my favourite time of year.....FALL!! Pumpkin pie, cozy sweaters, the colours of the leaves, it is all about texture and colour.
Trend Watch Current trends include suiting type fabrics for bedding; green products continue to evolve and become more commonplace in residential products; texture is big in wallpapers and many of the high end papers are hand crafted; gas fireplaces are sleek with clean faces, no mantels and stones instead of logs.
Area Carpets This newsletter, I would like to focus on area carpets. There are so many choices in the market place from a design, quality and price point of view. A few things to consider are as follows:
- What is the primary purpose of the carpet? Warmth, beauty, sound absorption, defining a space?
- Function – ask yourself if this is a carpet you plan to have for a very long time, or you may want to trade in, or pass to a next generation or is it simply a carpet that you will replace in a short time and do not care if the children spill juice or the dog has an accident
- Once you have determined the purpose, the next step is the size. The size of the room, function of the room and furniture placement must be considered in order to properly determine the size of the carpet.
- Budget is the next factor. Be realistic with your expectations. A hand knotted silk and wool carpet is going to cost considerably more that a machine made synthetic carpet.
- Quality relates to the purpose, function, and budget. Make sure you know what you are getting, the content of the fibres, where the carpet is made and how to clean it.
- Design/Colour one of the most challenging decisions. You must first decide if the carpet is the primary focus in the room, or if the furniture and draperies are. For those who consider “carpet art” for the floor, the carpet style and color will be chosen first and the furniture and draperies second. For many people, the carpet is chosen to compliment and accent the furniture and drapery choices. Either way, many factors including light, flooring, and the angle at which you will see the carpet are all important during the selection process.
- Installation is best done by the professionals when buying a higher end carpet. The nap is considered when placing the carpet and the installation of an under pad can be tricky.
For many people, area carpets are a long term investment. A well chosen beautiful carpet can provide joy to the home on a daily basis.
So, cozy up on the carpet in front of the fire this winter...think about art on the floor.....contact me if you need a carpet or want to replace the one you have!!
