Spring has finally arrived!
As I write this, the trees are bursting into leaf and the lawns are green! This spring wherever we turn we are exposed to information on "Going Green". Just what exactly does that mean for design and decor? There are political and social issues, as well as human health aspects.
In this newsletter, I would like to touch on the human health aspects. There are many people who have environmental hypersensitivities and it is crucial to their health to choose wisely when renovating their home. As we age, our immune systems become more fragile and our children seem to have more allergies than ever before. So it makes sense to incorporate as many green choices as possible when making changes to the home. Make sure you tell your decorator about any allergies or sensitivities so they can research and select the best products for you.
Some things to think about when renovating your home:
- Floor choices - use concrete, tile, cork, linoleum, bamboo, hardwood or ceramic instead of carpet. Avoid vinyl coatings.
- Low emission cabinets
- Low emission countertops
- Low VOC paints (C2 paints are a relatively new product that meets the California (toughest) standards for low VOC paints)
- Low emission cements, grouts, glues
- Insulation - alternative products made from soy are low toxic
- Have the range hood ventilated to the outside. Proper ventilation in a house is so important.
- Any carpeting should be made from natural materials (composition of under pad important too)
- Choose enamelled steel bathtubs and sinks rather than acrylic.
- Window frames can be insulation filled fibreglass with baked enamel finish rather then vinyl.
- Fabrics - use untreated cotton felt, hemp, and wools. Avoid fabrics treated with soil and stain repellents.
There are many resources available for more detailed information. A couple of websites to check out are:
