“Spring is finally HERE!!!”

Wow, after that long cold nasty winter we endured, the last several days of sunshine and warm weather were welcomed! The flurry of activity from birds to humans cleaning, sweeping, organizing their nests…..stretching legs and absorbing the warmth of the suns’ rays.

  “Inside to Outside”

The addition of a vase of fresh cut spring blossoms brightens up any room in the home or office. A small planter with bulbs often lasts longer and really says “spring”. But don’t forget your front door……a nice spring wreath is an inviting way to greet your guests!!

  “What’s in a floor???”

Long gone are the days when slapping down some new linoleum and installing wall-to-wall carpet was the standard flooring solution. Today the options of flooring are as mind boggling as the options at the coffee counter!

Before you venture out floor shopping or have your Interior Decorator shop for you, there are “Where”, “What”, and “How” questions you need to ask yourself.
  1. Where is the floor being installed and what is the primary use of the space?
  2. What type of look and feel to the room do you want to achieve?
  3. How much maintenance are you prepared to commit to?
  4. How much money do you want to spend?
  5. How long before you will want to, or need to replace the floor again?

The primary use of the space is important to determine the right specifications to ensure wear and tear durability of the flooring material. For example, if you really want hardwood floor in your kitchen ask yourself if you are the type of person who does not mind a few dents and scratches. No matter how hard the species of hardwood, a kitchen floor takes wear and tear with mopping, dropping etc. In a basement, warmth may be a big factor, so a hard surface flooring material may not be the best choice unless you install a heated floor. In a commercial environment, commercial grade carpets are a necessity.

The type of look and feel to the room is important in your choices. If you want the flooring material to be a part of the “art” in the room, a small area can be chosen or the entire surface can make a statement. A popular trend is the inset of decorative tiles in the foyer instead of an area carpet. Depending on the tile materials chosen, only a quick mop up keeps the foyer floor looking fabulous.

Bamboo is becoming a popular wood floor choice. However, it has a very strong character and works better with simple contemporary type furnishings.

Maintenance is somewhat less of an issue for flooring materials than it used to be, however, many materials such as marble, slate, and terrazzo require proper sealing at the time of installation, and the continuation of correct maintenance in order to maintain their beauty and durability.

Budgets, often dictate what materials are chosen. There are amazing vinyl tile products that from a distance look like natural materials, but are often much less expensive for both material and installation costs.

Trendy floor products are fun to have, but take into consideration how long you plan to live in the space and how long do you want to live with your choice of flooring material. Another factor is saleability of your home if you are not planning to stay long. Many potential buyers do not want to spend money on replacing flooring that is not worn out, but looks outdated.

The above notes really only scratch the surface when it comes to flooring and choices that are available. It is important to seek out expert help in selection, design and installation. Beautiful materials can be ruined with a bad installation job!

Enjoy the spring and have a fun filled summer!!!

Rhonda
