Fall....the glorious colors of the leaves, pumpkins and spice and all things nice! Dig out your sweaters and light the candles in the evenings.

Trend notes:

What is happening this fall on the color scene? Well, color is influenced by a number of factors and as the world seems to get smaller, world events and trends are having a greater effect on what colors and patterns are on the market.

Two key influences are “balance” and “cultural”. Balance is becoming increasing important in both our personal and professional lives, particularly in times of uncertainty. Cultural influences from travel, on line information, and the continuing shift in our population has a major impact on the inspiration for pattern and color combos and trends.

In these times of uncertainty, the backdrop remains neutral i.e. your walls or large pieces of furniture. Classics like black and white are back and give us a sense of balance. Grey is still hot in paint and fabric; however it is paired with bright yellows, greens, purples or reds. The reds for fall have a blue undertone and the oranges are very energetic and spicy. The metal color of choice is bronze but you can mix it up with other metal tones too. The yellows are very pure like a gemstone and the greens are very grassy or nature like. Some of the fall Pantone color names are Bamboo (yellow), Phlox (purple), Cedar (green) and Honeysuckle (pink).

Current and upcoming tile patterns in bathrooms and kitchen have a Moroccan influence. Use sparingly and be prepared to re-tile in the not too distance future though! You will also see similar patterns in fabrics.

Drapery 4 U

There are a number of very nice readymade drapes on the market to choose from, so how does one decide if they want custom drapes, or just buy readymade ones?? The two factors that will dictate your choice is:

1) the size of your window

2) the size of your budget

Readymade drapes typically come in one panel widths and two different lengths (84” and 96”). Some higher end brands also come in lengths of 108” and 120”. Most fabric panels are 54” wide and by the time you allow for side seams and pleats, the width of the top of one panel is often around 22”. With two panels, your maximum coverage is 44” and that does not allow for centre overlap, or any allowance on the sides of the windows.

Since tab top and grommet top drapes are not pleated, a panel will give you more coverage on the window, but you still have to allow for some gathering in the fabric when closed to have the proper draping of the fabric.

Readymade drapes can be great on those windows that do not require any privacy or sun protection, or if blinds are in place, since the panels can be left stationary on the sides. Although, proportion and balance for the window is still required so putting a narrow drape on each side of a really wide window does not work.

There are readymade sheers, silk, linen, polyester, and cotton blend drapes to choose from. The colors and patterns are often very standard, which of course if best for volume sales in retail stores. If you want something more unique, and your budget allows it, custom drapes are the way to go. Color, pattern, lining, pleat heading, and length, all become your choice.

As to whether the drapes should be short, above the floor, at the floor, puddled on the floor....you will have to ask your decorator :) !

Have a great fall and winter!
